Abstract

1,142,101. Butadiene polymerization using lithium compounds. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. 19 Jan., 1966 [22 Jan., 1965], No. 2561/66. Heading C3P. Butadiene or a mixture thereof with styrene, α-methylstyrene or a vinyl toluene is polymerized in an inert hydrocarbon solvent by initiating the polymerization by a Li-based catalyst by either (a) adding to the reaction mixture either (i) a lithio-hydrocarbon α-acetylide having one Li atom attached to the terminal acetylene C and another Li atom attached to the C, α to the other C of the acetylene group or (ii) an isomeric allene cmpd. capable of existing in equilibrium with the Li acetylide OR (b) adding alkyl lithium to the reaction mixture and reacting therewith (i) a hydrocarbon α-acetylene or a hydrocarbon α-acetylene having a Li-atom attached to the terminal C or (ii) an isomeric allene capable of existing in equilibrium with the acetylene or lithio acetylene, the amt. of the acetylene or allene being from 400-5000 p.p.m. of the monomer. The polymer obtained has a wide M.W. distribution. Initiators specified are 1,3-dilithio-1-butyne, the reaction products of 1-butyne with 3 moles of butyl Li; vinyl acetylene with 2 moles of butyl Li; vinyl acetylene with 3 moles of butyl Li and 1,2- butadiene with 2 moles of butyl Li.
