Abstract

1308459 Siloxane-unsaturated compound block copolymers DOW CORNING Ltd 19 June 1970 [20 June 1969] 31294/69 Headings C3P and C3T Block copolymers are obtained by (a) polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a lithium-containing carbanion producing polymerization initiator and an aprotic solvent, (b) contacting the lining product with a cyclic organotrisiloxane or a cyclic organosilethylene siloxane, and optionally terminating the product with (i) conventional terminating agents, including CO 2 , or (ii) with a coupling agent such as a polyhalo silane or siloxane, the latter producing products of the form (AB) x C, where A is derived from (a) above, B from (b) above, c is the residue of the coupling agent and x is at least 2. The products may be compounded with, e.g. polystyrene. In examples, styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, 2-vinyl pyridine or vinyl naphthalene and polymerized in the presence of n-butyl lithium or a complex thereof with styrene or 1,1-diphenyl ethylene in various solvents, e.g. hexane, tetrahydrofuran and dimethyl formamide, followed by the polymerization of hexamethyl or a mixture thereof with hexaphenylcyclotrisiloxane or 2,2,5,5 - tetramethyl - 1- oxa - 2,5 - disilacyclopentane, and in some cases CO 2 or CH 3 OH termination and in others coupling with 1,5 - dichloro - 1,1,3,3,5,5- hexamethyltrisiloxane.
