Abstract

1375871 Alpha-methyl styrene-siloxane block copolymers DOW CORNING Ltd 7 July 1972 [15 July 1971] 33285/71 Addition to 1308459 Headings C3P and C3T A siloxane-organic block copolymer in which the organic blocks are derived predominantly from α-methylstyrene is prepared by (a) polymerizing α-methylstyrene in an aprotic organic solvent in the presence of a lithium-containing anionic initiator at below 20‹ C., (b) adding a cyclic organotrisiloxane and an anionically polymerizable organic monomer whose anion can react with the trisiloxane, still at below 20‹ C., so that one or more units (preferably 1 to 6) derived from the monomer become attached to at least some of the living polymethylstyrene chains and (c) allowing the trisiloxane to polymerize on to the polymer chains in the presence of a polar aprotic organic solvent. The organic substituents on the silicon atoms of the trisiloxane are hydrogen atoms, monovalent hydrocarbon groups or #-perfluoroalkylethyl groups, no silicon atom being bonded to more than one hydrogen atom. The monomer added in step (b) may be 1-vinylnaphthalene, butadiene isoprene, acrylonitrile, 2- or 4-vinylpyridine, thiacyclobutane, methyl thiacyclobutane, propylene sulphide or, preferably, styrene. Polymers having a polymer block derived from α-methylstyrene joined to a block derivable from one of the specified siloxanes by y units derived from one of the specified monomers, where y is from 1 to “of the number of units in the methylstyrene block, are claimed per se. The polymers may be recovered directly after neutralization, e.g. with CO 2 or Me 3 SiCl, but they are preferably coupled by reaction with a compound having at least two reactive groups, e.g. a silane, siloxane or disilylethylene having at least two halogen substituents. They may be compounded with other polymers such as polystyrene or poly- (α-methylstyrene). In examples the linking monomer is isoprene or styrene and the siloxane is hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane; only a part of the siloxane is added with the other monomer, the remainder being added when a siloxanolate anion has been formed on the polymer chain. The resulting living polymers are coupled with (ClSiMe 2 ) 2 O, (Cl 2 MeSiCH 2 ) 2 or or terminated with Me 3 SiCl.
