Abstract

1,203,060. Stuffer box for crimping filaments. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 29 Dec., 1967 [30 Dec., 1966], No. 59002/67. Headings D1F and D1W. Synthetic filaments are stuffer box crimped by feeding sufficient filaments to the feed rolls of the box that they are kept at the rolls in a compacted and tightly contacting condition forming two or three layers of filaments which are at an elevated temperature. It is stated that the primary crimps generated in the filaments lie in a direction perpendicular to the feed plane of the filaments and are of sinusoidal rather than of saw-tooth shape. Secondary crimps produced also lie in this direction. The filaments are pre-heated by passage through a hot air or steam chamber, while the feed rolls of the stuffer box are also heated. The cross-section of the softened filaments in the outer layers is distorted into a pentagonal shape. The filaments may be nylon, polypropylene, or a polyester.
