Abstract

1423122 Crimping yarns SCAM ENG SOC RESP LIM 15 May 1974 [15 May 1973] 21573/74 Heading D1F Thermoplastic yarn 2 is texturized by preheating the yarn until it is semi-plastic by contact with at least one heated surface 1, passing the preheated yarn through a crimping zone 10 by a jet of fluid under pressure which is at a temperature such as to maintain the yarn in a semi-plastic state, effecting crimping of the yarn by sudden expansion of the fluid in the zone 10, discharging the fluid as it leaves the zone 10, and collecting the yarn in a stuffer box 11. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 3, the yarn 2 is preheated by rollers 1, around which it may be wound one or more times, to a temperature between the second order transition point and the melting point of the polymer constituting the yarn, and is fed to a texturizing means 4 by way, if desired, of a moisturizing chamber 3. The yarn is fed into the inlet 7 of a venturi 8 by a jet of hot fluid, e.g. air or superheated steam, by an injector 5 having a nozzle with a calibrated opening 6. The filaments of the yarn 2 emerging from the outlet 9 of the venturi 8 are crimped by the sudden expansion of the fluid in the zone 10 and the yarn passes into the stuffer box 11. The expanded fluid is discharged from the zone 10 through openings 12 which may lie in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the venturi 8 or may be inclined at an angle of 15‹-30‹ to this plane. The stuffer box 11 may be provided with a stopper device to regulate the density and the time of residence of the yarn therein. Discharge rollers 13 may be provided. Preferably, the inlet cone angle of the venturi 8 is 75‹-90‹ and the outlet cone angle 75‹-110‹. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the pre-heating rollers are replaced by a heated plate (15). Specified yarns are polyamides, e.g. nylon 6 and nylon 66, linear polyesters, cellulose esters, polyolefins, e.g. polypropylene, and polyvinyl and polyacrylic resins.
