Abstract

1,202,917. Protective arrangements. ELEKTROPHYSIKALISCHE ANSTALT BERNHARD BERGHAUS. 8 Nov., 1967 [9 Nov., 1966], No. 50779/67. Heading H2K. In a protective arrangement for a glow discharge apparatus used for metallurgical processes, an auxiliary electrode is provided in addition to the main electrode or workpiece, a change in the ratio between the currents supplied to the electrodes producing a control signal. As shown, the currents I s , I w to the auxiliary and main electrodes (not shown) cause voltage drops U s , U w across series resistors 5, 6. These voltages are applied differentially through a resistor 11 across the base-emitter circuit of a transistor 10. In the event of arcing, the voltage U w increases relative to the voltage U s , and the transistor 10 conducts to operate a relay 12 or to provide an output voltage V A . The relay 12 may effect a brief disconnection of the supply to the apparatus and if the disconnections are frequent, the final interruption of the supply occurs. If the circuit of the auxiliary electrode becomes defective, the blowing of a fuse in that circuit ensures operation of the protective arrangement. For a three-phase apparatus the arrangement described above is triplicated.
