Abstract

To reduce the effect of capacitive leakage current across the open contacts of switches 11 Fig. 2 in the unused channels of a number of channels connected in parallel to the input of a common amplifier 13, a second switch 18 is included in each channel and this switch, when "open", connects the portions 21 of the channel conductors between the switches to a guard rail 16 of the amplifier which in turn is connected through the switch 14 in the one channel being used to an earthed terminal of the signal source. A guard rail 20 for the conductors 21 between the switches is connected to the amplifier guard 16, and in a modification where the main switch 11 is arranged to transfer the input signal to an alternative line through contacts 85, Fig. 5, should the switch 18 operate before switch 11, the rate of discharge of a capacitor 22 connected across the input channel which is thereby short circuited is reduced by a resistor 26 connected between the contacts 19 of the switch 18. Alternatively the short circuiting of the capacitor is prevented by placing the switches 18 on the input side of the main switches 11 and reversing the connection of switches 18 so that their movable contacts are connected to the inputs of the main switches as depicted in Fig.4 (not shown). When semiconductors are employed as switching elements, the leakage conductance is also reduced by the circuit described.
