Abstract

1,202,648. Rotating current and air coupling. CONSOLIDATED FOODS CORP. 19 June, 1968 [22 Sept., 1967], No. 29228/68. Heading H2E. A current conducting rotatable airflow coupling for a vacuum cleaner provides connection between wires in the cleaner body and hose as well as allowing the air to pass from the hose into the cleaner body. The wires from inside the cleaner body 11 are connected to flat circular slip-rings 17 mounted on a tube 16 that functions as a suction inlet conduit. A rotatable ring 14 with portions 15, 15a, 15b supports sockets 20 which are connected to slip-ring 17 via wires 21 and spring-biased contact portions 18. The hose 31, having end portion 30 that supports pins 32a, when inserted in tube 16 allows mating between parts 32a, 20, the whole assembly being able to swivel to prevent kinking of the hose when in use. In a second arrangement, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), ring 14 is replaced by a member (114) which contains contact portions (118), similar to 18, on its inner surface for contact with slip-rings (117) that are carried on a portion of the suction inlet tube that extends beyond the cleaner body in a recess (112). In a third embodiment, Figs. 6-9 (not shown), the ring members 14, (114) can be eliminated by splitting the suction inlet tube into two halves, one of which can swivel. The swivelling portion carries the slip-rings to which contact on their outer surface is made by stationary spring contacts (218) and on their inner surface by contacts (240) on the hose. The hose must be fully inserted into the swivelling portion before contact is made.
