A lock mechanism and key comprises a stationary hollow cup-shaped outer cylinder 60, a hollow cup-shaped inner cylinder 61, a portion of which is rotatable and axially slidable in said outer cylinder, and its outer end face having a recess, for a key, a coupling member 63 and a guide member 71 rotatably journalled and restrained axially of said outer cylinder, the guide member 71, and a portion of the coupling member being disposed in the interior of the said outer cylinder and a tumbler 72 which includes a shank journalled rotatably and restrained axially in said guide member, said tumbler having a head 73 provided with an axial groove 77 in its rear end face and a permanent magnet 74 in a recess in its forward end face with poles in juxtaposition to the inner front end wall 75 of said inner cylinder and in the locking condition abutting the same, wherein a nose 78 on the inner circumference of said inner cylinder is capable of engaging in the said groove 77 in said head from behind; wherein said inner cylinder carries pins 68 on its annular rear end portion which are disposed parallel to the axis of the inner cylinder, the pins being surrounded by coiled compression springs 79 and passing through bores in said guide member 71; wherein permanently magnetized poles of opposite polarity (provided by magnets 89, 80) are provided on the juxtapositioned end faces of said head and guide member keeping, by magnetic attraction said head in the locking condition in a rotational position relative to said nose out of alignment with said groove and so as to engage the rear end face of said head; and wherein the key comprises a permanent magnet 83 having poles on its face which is engaged with the bottom of the recess in the outer end face of the inner cylinder and of opposite polarity to the juxtaposed poles of the magnet 74 in the recess in the tumbler head, said key when applied to said recess turning said head by magnetic attraction into a position in which said axial groove therein is aligned with said nose and allowing said compression springs to move the said inner cylinder outwardly into a coupling position. In the coupling position claws 67 carried by the pins 68 engage grooves 66 of the inner cylinder.
