Abstract

1,202,134. Etching. GROOVE & WELTER. 16 Jan., 1969 [22 Oct., 1968], No. 2662/69. Heading B6J. An etched metal printing plate having half tone dots covered by a photochemical resist layer is "tone-etched" to simultaneously reduce the size of the dot and resist layer by treatment with a solution containing hydrogen halide and nitric acid in a molar ratio HX/HNO 3 (where X is halogen) between 1 : 0.75 and 1 : 50. The plate may be zinc or a zinc alloy. The halide may be hydrogen chloride. The solution may be in water in aqueous alcohol or alcohol (the alcohol being methanol, ethanol or isopropanol). The solution may contain a wetting agent.
