Abstract
1,199,786. lon sources. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 27 Oct., 1967 [13 Sept., 1967], No. 48883/67. Heading H1D. A mass spectrometer field-ionization source comprises an array of parallel anode tips in single linear array, Fig. 3A, double linear array, Fig. 3B, or areal array, Fig. 3C, the tips being adjustable by pivoting the anode holder (31, Fig. 2) to lie at an angle, e.g. 30 to 50 degrees, preferably 40 degrees, to the ion exit slit in the complementary cathode member. Suitable dimensions and voltages are given. The ion source may include for alternative use an electron beam bombardment ion source arrangement provided below the field ionization source, Fig. 2 (not shown). Beam centering and focussing plates are provided.
