Abstract

1,199,504. Electrolytically machining arcuate workpieces. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. March 12, 1969 [March 19, 1968], No. 13271/68. Heading C7B. In a method of electrolytically removing metal from an arcuate workpiece 20 using an arcuate or part-annular tool 21, in which the tool is placed adjacent to the workpiece for rotation relative thereto such that a narrow gap exists between the workpiece and the working surface of the tool which is the surface radially outermost with respect to the axis of relative rotation, and electrolyte is directed into said gap whilst effecting relative rotation between the workpiece and tool and making the workpiece electrically positive relative to the tool, the radially outer surface of the tool is, at any given instant of operation, inclined at that instant to the direction of relative rotation at an angle not exceeding 15 degrees, and preferably between “ degrees and 5 degrees. The tool working face 25 may be provided with a series of alternate orifices connected via conduits 27 to an electrolyte supply manifold 26 and apertures connected via conduits 31 to electrolyte exhaust manifold 32. The working face of the tool may be stepped as shown. The method may be used for machining rotor sealing segments for gas turbine engines.
