Abstract

Figs. 1, 3 show a car jack comprising a support column 10, attached to a tilting base 12, along which an extension 18 equipped with a lifting claw 28 is displaceable through a manually operated crank 46 driving a threaded spindle 42. The support column 10 slopes outwardly and upwardly away from the vehicle to be lifted, the extension 18 being pivoted on lugs 30 to a guide member 28 arranged to slide on the support column 10. The tilting base has two legs 14, 16, Fig. 1, showing the position in which the jack is fitted to the vehicle to be lifted. The lower part of the extension 18 rests on the column 10 through a sliding member 34. The lower part of the column 10 forms a stationary guide member 48 so that the extension 18 pivots from the starting position, Fig. 1, in which the lifting claw is a perpendicular distance a from the longitudinal axis of the spindle 42, to an end-of-pivoting position where this distance is b, Fig. 3, the support column 10 pivoting with the base 12 from the arm 16 to the arm 14. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), an extension (50) is pivotally mounted within a support column 52 on a nut (56) on a spindle (54). Fig. 6 shows an embodiment in which the jack has a base 70 which maintains its position during the pivoting of a support column 72, pivoted thereto at 78, an extension 80 pivoted at 88 operating as described for the extension 18 above.
