Abstract

1,198,403. Fuel cells. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DE RAFFINAGE. 6 Sept., 1968 [7 Sept., 1967], No. 42521/68. Heading H1B. In a fuel cell with a cubio-phaae, stabilized ZrO 2 as electrolyte, the anode consists of an electron collector and an oxidation catalyst. The catalyst may be dispersed in the current collector or formed as a lazer thereon. In an example a cathode is formed on the inner wall of a tubular element of stabilized zirconia by painting it with a silver paint and heating it to remove the solvent. A silver current-collector is similarly formed on the outside of the tube. An aq. catalyst-forming solution of Cr(N0 3 ) 3 and AgNO 3 is then sprayed on to the outside of the heated tube. After the spraying the tube was heated at 600-700‹ C. to form a catalyst of Cr 2 O 3 and Ag. Silver leads are welded to the electrodes and the cell is operated at 750‹ C. as as H 2 /air, CH 4 /air or C 4 H 10 /air fuel cell. The current collector may also be of Cu or of ZrO 2 containing a stabilizing oxide and UO 2 and the catalyst may be Cr,Ag, Mo, W, V and/or Cu and/or an oxide thereof.
