Abstract

1,198,344. Electromagnetic flowmeters. GEORGE KENT Ltd. Jan.30, 1969 [Feb.2, 1968], No.5531/68. Heading G1N. The total rate of flow of an electrically conductive fluid flowing along a pipe 19 with a velocity which is non-uniform over its cross-section is measured by at least one sensing head 10 comprising an electromagnet and a pair of electrodes and positioned within the pipe to genreate an e.m.f. dependent on the flow velocity adjacent the head from which e.m.f. the total flow-rate is derived. If the velocity distribution is known, one sensing head will suffice, otherwise a plurality of sensing heads is provided and their outputs are combined with appropriate weightings to give the total flowrate. Each sensing head comprises a pair of electrodes 18 mounted on a tube of streamline cross-section containing a winding 16 on an iron core 14 with polepieces at its ends and is held in place by a hollow strut 21 through which the electrical leads pass.
