665,990. Flowmeters. WACE, E. F. May 12, 1949 [May 13, 1948], No. 13199/48. Class 69 (i). In a meter for measuring the rate of fluid flow in a closed duct, the sensitive element consists of part of the closed duct in the form of a coiled tube, the greater portion of which is free to move and through which the flow is directed. In one form, Fig. 1, a fluid flow meter comprises a double helical tube, the ends of which are clamped by an anchor block A, and through which flows the fluid to be measured. A bridge piece B is fastened across the closed end of the helices and connected by a draw bar D to a light pointer E. Preferably the number of turns in each helix should be odd. In another form, Fig. 3, a single helix is enclosed in a pressure resisting case G and the amount of rotation of the free end H measured by electronic or magnetic means (not shown) coupled directly or through gearing to the free end or by an electric strain gauge attached to the point of greatest distortion of the helix.
