Abstract

1,197,999. Electromagnetic relays; electric selectors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 5 Feb., 1969 [8 Feb., l968], No. 6303/68. Headings H1L and H1N. [Also in Division H4] A multicontact relay which may be used in telephone matrices to switch either eight wire or four wire connections has a coil mounting E-shaped magnetic structure 16, the middle arm of the structure being longer than the outer arms thereof and extending through an insulating plate 15 into a chamber 14 enclosing movable spring contacts in sets biased to act on opposite ends of an armature 19 which is recessed to fit on the end of the middle arm of the structure 16 and is biased to a centre-stable position by the contact springs which cooperate with respective sets of fixed contacts on a further plate 10 parallel to the plate 15 and forming a wall of the chamber. The fixed contacts are parts of a printed circuit arrangement on the plate 10 and the movable contact springs are bent down at 13 to engage or be secured to printed circuit connections on an upper board 1]. The springs engage an insulator 20 on the armature 19 and one made from a single stamped-out blank 2, 3 (Fig. 1, not shown) which is bonded to an insulating frame 12 before the springs are separated from the frame of the blank to provide the structure shown in Fig. 4 with the divided contact ends coated in " precious metal." The member 15 has legs 21 (Figs. 7 to 10, not shown) which extend through holes in the frame 12 and plates 10, 11 to be secured by a spring clip (33) engaging in slots in the ends of the legs. The coils 17, 18 of the relay may be connected with respective diodes mounted on the upper printed circuit board and form part of a four-wire crosspoint (Fig. 11, not shown). Fig. 12 shows the contacts of one relay 40 as single wire connections arranged so that if the relays L.H. coil is energized inlet 3 is connected to 42 and inlet 4 to 41. If the R.H. coil is energized inlet 1 is connected to 42 and inlet 2 to 41 whilst the choice between the two inlets is effected by a divider relay similar to that shown but with a lesser number of contacts. The divider relay may have a permanent magnet middle arm to its magnetic structure to retain the armature. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,083,596, 1,116,556 and 1,116,557.
