Abstract

1,197,631. Determining porosity. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 24, 1968 [May 2, 1967], No.20371/67. Heading G1S. A suction head 1 comprises an inner vacuum chamber 2 separated by a boundary wall 11 from a surrounding vacuum chamber 3 whose outer wall is 10, and is connected via pipes 14, 17 and 15 to a vacuum pump 23. Flowmeters 8 and 18 are connected in the pipes and pressure indicators 4, 5 and air bleed valves 6, 7 and 22 are provided. In operation for measuring the porosity of concrete, valves 6, 7 are closed and valve 22 is partly closed, the head 1 is applied to concrete and vacuum applied to the chambers 2, 3. The valve 22 is adjusted to give a desired vacuum pressure and the pressures in chambers 2 and 3 are balanced by opening the valves 6, 7, and the flow from the chamber 2 is measured by meter 8 which gives a measure of the flow through the area covered by chamber 2. A modified head is illustrated in Figs 4 and 5 (not shown) in which the head is D- shaped and has an inclined sealing face (25) so that the head may be used on a stepped joint between two building structures.
