Abstract

1388016 Testing permeability of materials in situ AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORISATION DE LA RECHERCHE 22 Feb 1972 [25 Feb 1971] 8071/72 Heading G1S The permeability measuring apparatus comprises tubes 6, 7, Fig. 2, arranged side by side within superposed sleeves 8, 9, and at least three inflatable closures 10, 11, 12 adapted to close at three different places along the axis of a borehole T the annular space between the outer walls of the sleeves 8, 9 and the wall of the borehole. The tubes 6, 7 and the sleeves 8, 9 are perforated in particular places so that liquid may be supplied by the pipe 6 to the space 1 and the space 3 through its open end 14a, and the liquid may be supplied by pipe 7 only to the space 2. The liquid so pumped into the spaces 1-3 flows outwardly through the wall of the borehole at E 1 , E 2 , and E 3 and the various flow-rates are measured by flowmeters such as 17. Approximate readings of liquid pressures in the spaces can be obtained by detectors (not shown) lodged in these spaces or by means of auxiliary pipes (18), (19) Fig. 3 (not shown) connecting the spaces to the surface, and a pressure in cavity 2 is obtained which is different from the pressure in cavities 1 and 3. From these pressure and flowrates a determination of permeability at various depths may be obtained using a formula disclosed. In Fig. 1 the pressures are obtained from Piezometers 4 introduced into the soil adjacent the main borehole. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 the apparatus comprises a single pipe 20 perforated at 21 and 22 and open at its lower end so that all the cavities are filled with liquid at the same pressure and flowmeters 24, 25 are provided. A Piezo-metric cell 27 measures pressure in the cavity 2 or the pressure could be measured by an auxiliary tube.
