Abstract

1,190,976. Testing hardness of soil. LABORATORIO NACIONAL DE ENGENHARIA CIVIL. July 26, 1967. [July 29, 1966], No.34470/67. Heading G1N. The hardness of the soil comprising the wall of a borehole is determined by applying pressure to the wall and measuring the change in diameter. A steel cylinder 1, covered with a rubber envelope 2 whose ends are sealed into the cylinder, is axially lowered into the borehole and fluid under pressure introduced between the rubber envelope and the cylinder via inlet 7, causing the envelope to apply pressure to the wall of the borehole. The resulting diameter of the borehole is measured by a differential transformer 10 with diametrically opposed biased rods 11 attached to the core and windings respectively of the transformer. Four transformers are used, displaced axially along the unit, progressively displaced angularly by 45‹ . The air pressure inside the cylinder 1 is controlled via pipe 6 to operate a relief valve 5 for the fluidpressure between the envelope and cylinder, and to retract the rods 11 for moving the unit along the borehole.
