Abstract
1,197,514. Sintered metal coatings. LOCKHEED AIRCRAFT CORP. Aug.25, 1967. No. 39324/67. Heading C7D. Substrates such as glass, quartz, beryllia, ceramic and porcelain are metallized by coating with a suspension of Ti, Zr, Hf or U in an aqueous solution of alkali metal halide and/or alkaline earth metal halides and heating in a non oxidizing atmosphere to melt the salts and form a sintered metal coating. The halides may be LiCl, NaCl, KCl or CaCl 2 , and the substrate is preferably pre-heated to 200‹ -300‹F prior to applying the suspension preferably by spraying. The coated product is heated 1200‹ -1600‹F in argon or nitrogen forming an actively sintered layer of the respective suspended metal. The product is suitable for brazing or soldering ceramic to ceramic or ceramic to metal, as an electrical conductor for circuit patterns, and for resistors and capacitors.
