Abstract

1,196,222. Television pick-up tubes. RCA CORPORATION. 27 March, 1968 [7 April, 1967], No. 14649/68. Heading H1D. An image isocon pick-up tube having an electron gun 32 and an electron multiplier 34 at one end, a photo-emissive cathode 42 at the other, a charge storage grid 44 and a separating electrode 62 for separating two components of the beam returning to the gun, i.e. specularly reflected electrons 57 and scattered signal electrons 60, has a magnetic field produced by a coil structure 22, 24 for directing either of the two components to the electrode 62 for collection. The coil structure and the separating electrode are disposed adjacent each other near an antinode of the returning beam, and the coil structure consists of four coils angularly spaced around the tube. A persuader electrode 66 is provided for urging the returning electrons passing through the aperture 64 of electrode 62 into the electron multiplier. Either electrode 62 or the electron multiplier can be used for obtaining an output signal. The charge storage grid may be a thin membrane of glass, magnesium oxide or aluminium oxide.
