Abstract

1,195,684. Tufting apparatus. SINGER-COBBLE Ltd. 29 June, 1967 [10 June, 1966], No. 25876/66. Heading D1G. Rows of U-shaped yarn tufts are formed in a support element or backing fabric 15 from reels 11 of yarn ends, supported on an endless band or chain 12 by rows of needles 14 on bars 13 adapted to be actuated vertically by a displacement means 16 at a tufting station. The projected yarn ends are at a first penetration gripped 'by gripper means 17 and held whilst the needles are retracted and then re-inserted with loops of yarns at a spaced position. These loops are engaged and cut by looping and cutting means 18 so that on the next withdrawal of the needles and release of the gripper means 17 a row of U-shaped tufts are left. The single limbs of the tufts may be separated by one or more tuft loops by omitting the cutting operation and merely holding the loops as required.
