1,109,224. Making pile fabrics. BERGEDORFER EISENWERK G.m.b.H. ASTRAWERKE, S. S. C. FLEISCHER, C. C. THOMSEN, and P. DURRSCHMIDT. 14 July, 1965 [16 July, 1964], No. 29950/65. Headings DIE and D1K. Pile tufts n are fed to a carpet making machine by assembling them in carriers 89 mounted on endless conveyor chains. The tufts are located by insulated spacers 90 and metal combs 99. Yarns are supplied by colour selector bars similar to those employed in gripper Axminster looms. A row of grippers 16 first moves horizontally from c to d to draw out sufficient yarn for a row of tufts, which are then cut by an endless band knife; the grippers then move along the path d to e to deposit the tufts between the spacers 90 of a carrier. The tufts are pushed home by plungers which, if a tuft is missing, touch the combs 99 to complete a stop motion circuit. The length of tuft can be changed by modifying the path of the grippers 16; if the straight movement cd is extended to d', the final movement is extended by ee', which is half dd', so that tufts with equal legs are always formed.
