Abstract

421,740. Pile fabric looms. WALSH, T. P., 26, Upton Street, Boston, U.S.A. June 30, 1933, No. 18632. [Class 142 (ii)] In looms for weaving Oriental knotted fabrics groups of yarn-supplying devices are arranged at intervals across the loom, a thread e cut from each group being held at one end by a pair of grippers 172, 173, Fig. 27, and at the other end by a " weaving block " 161 that is mounted in a groove in a finger arranged to clear the warp threads, and adapted to be moved together with the pile thread into the groove of an adjacent finger, into the position shown in Fig. 28. Smyrna or other Oriental knots may be made by combinations of the transverse movements of the block with the shedding of the pile warps O, P. When a series of spaced knots have been formed, they are beaten up, and the knotting- devices move along and are supplied with further selected threads. When a row of knots has been formed, two shots of weft are inserted and beaten up, and the operations are repeated. The pile threads may be supplied in the required colours by an Axminster spool device, or by thread guides 80, Figs. 18 and 19, arranged transversely in groups of three, and each having four slotted guide openings for pile threads e drawn from a supply. For each knotting operation, one guide 80 of each group is lowered by jacquard mechanism Fig. 24 (not shown) until the required one of the four wefts carried thereby is in position to pass through a notch 228, Fig. 20, in a " weaving block " 161 and be seized by grippers 172, 173. The thread ends in the blocks are secured by vertically moving clamps 232. The threads are severed simultaneously by reciprocating cutters 139 adapted to be lowered for that purpose. The blocks 161 are slidable transversely in fingers 163 spaced to clear the warp threads and mounted on a slide V whereby the blocks may be moved into the shed. The blocks are adapted to be moved to enter grooves in adjacent fingers by blades 166. The grippers 172, 173, are mounted on a slide to move independently of the blocks to slacken the pile threads during knotting, as shown in Fig. 18. During transfer of the blocks with the pile threads to adjacent fingers 163, the clamps 232 are raised, and again grip the pile threads while the shed is being changed. To allow for the crimping of the weft, an excess length is drawn by arms that draw weft loops at the selvedges and release them at the beat-up.
