A panty girdle comprises a body and leg portion formed from two-way stretch fabric having an extensibility of more than 100 per cent. in both directions, the horizontal extensibility being at least twice the vertical, and a crotch piece which is also extensible in two directions, its vertical extensibility being approximately 200 per cent. The fabric of the body and leg portion is preferably warp knitted of Spandex yarns and the crotch piece is a tricot fabric of nylon and Spandex yarns. As shown the body and leg portion comprises inner thigh panels 18 and sections A, A<SP>1</SP>, the latter being seamed directly to each other at centre back (20), Fig. 5 (not shown), and each seamed to an inelastic panel P which comprises a laminate with a lace panel outermost. Sandwiched between layers of the panel and spanning the seam between sections A, A<SP>1</SP> and the panel P are elastic substantially elliptical panels 22. Similar panels 31 are secured to the inner face of the sections A, A<SP>1</SP> by seams 32, 33. Each section A, A<SP>1</SP> includes an extension (27), Fig. 5, which is folded back from the seam (20) on the inside of the girdle and further elastic reinforcing panels (30) span the edges of the extensions (27). Waist and leg bands a, b are of a material and stretchability similar to that of the adjacent body portion and have a soft inner facing. Strips 50 have a plurality of passages (55), Fig. 7 (not shown), for hooking on suspenders.
