M. M. SCHEINBERG FOUNDATION GARMENT Filed Dec. 31, 1954 INVE/V TOR Jlorzisfll'c 7121.72 berg BY My: M my fwd/aw ATTORNEYS United States Patent FOUNDATION GARMENT Morris M. Scheinberg, New York, N. Y., assignor to De Luxe Girdlecraft Co., Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application December 31, 1954, Serial No. 479,205
6 Claims. (Cl. 128-542) This invention relates to a foundation garment.
An object of the present invention is to provide a foundation garment which effectively restrains and supports the abdomen of the wearer.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a foundation garment which does not ride up during movement of the wearer.
A still further object 'of the present invention is to pro vide a foundation garment whose waist portion is-adjustable independently of the body portion.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a foundation garment having all of the desired advantages which is nevertheless inexpensive to manufacture and easy to produce.
Other objects and advantages are set forth in greater detail in the accompanying specification taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the foundation garment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the foundation garment of the present invention;
Fig. 3 is a section taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a section taken along the line 44 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a section taken along the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a foundation garment comprising a waistband section 11 and a hip section 12. The waistband section 11 and hip section 12 consist of material which stretches in two directions. A panel of material 13, stretchable only in a vertical direction, is located intermediate the waistband section 11 and hip section 12 and is secured thereto by means of stitching 14. Intermediate the waistband section 11 and hip section 12 at the rear of the garment there is provided a panel 17 of material which stretches in a vertical direction only. The panel is secured to the hip section 12 of the foundation garment by means of stitching. A panel 18 of material which stretches in a horizontal direction is secured to the top of the panel 17 and to the hip section 12 by means of stitching. Substantially non-elastic strips of material 20 and 21 are secured to the rear of the waistband section 11. The non-elastic portions 20 and 21 are provided with hooks 22 and eyes 23 for the purposes hereinafter set forth. Garters 24 are provided at the bottom of the foundation garment for gripping the stockings of the wearer.
An important feature of the present invention is the construction of the foundation garment wherein the waist, band section 11 while of the same material as the hip section 12 consists of a double layer of this two-way stretch material angularly disposed with respect to the hip section, as shown. While the waistband section 11 has been shown as a double layer of the two-way stretch material, it will be understood that the waistband section may comprise a single layer of material of greater strength than the material comprising the hip section. Further the waistband section and hip section may be of the same material with only a backing member secured to the waistband section to provide greater strength for this section.
I have found that with this construction, together with the front and rear panel portions as above described, the abdominal and posterior regions of the wearer of the foundation garment are restrained tightly while the garment is being worn without riding up upon movement of the wearer.
The waist adjustment is accomplished without adjusting any part of the hip section 12 by manual manipulation of the hooks 22 and eyes 23 whereby persons whose waist measurements are out of proportion to the body measurement may adjust the waistband section 11 of the garment in accordance with the actual size of the Waist of the wearer without affecting in any way the hip section. With such adjustment because of the construction and angular disposition of the waistband section of the foundation garment, the abdomen of the wearer is pulled in, restrained, and confined by a backward and upward movement. In addition, the panel 15 being of material stretchable only in a vertical direction, functions to restrain the abdomen of the wearer and with its unique vaselike shape causes the abdomen to be pressed upward and inward. With this invention should the hips of the wearer be out of proportion to the waist of the wearer, adjustment can be made by means of the hook-and-eye fasteners 22 and 23, either allowing the waistband section to expand or be contracted at the desire of the user. The rear panel 17 having vertical stretch causes the posterior portion of the wearer to be pressed upward whereby it is contracted by the panel 18 so that no bulge appears.
It is to be noted that the panel 18 is not connected to the waistband section 11 whereby the waistband section does not move upon movement of the posterior portion of the foundation garment. With the unique construction of this foundation garment, I have found that the abdomen and posterior portions of the body of the wearer are restrained effectively. The waistband section isconstantly in its appropriate position restraining the waist portion of the wearer.
While the invention has been described in some detail, it will be understood that variations and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
