Abstract

1,195,370. Cooling discharge apparatus. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO. Ltd. 13 Nov., 1967 [23 Dec., 1966], No. 57654/66. Heading H1D. In an electron discharge tube 1, e.g. an ignitron, in which cooling fluid, such as water, flows between an electrode forming part of the tube envelope and an external coolant jacket 2, the jacket 2 is made of a polycarbonate plastics material, e.g. that known under the trade name of "Madralon". As shown polycarbonate plastics jacket 2 is tubular and is secured to the tube 1 by internally threaded polycarbonate plastic caps 5 having O-ring seals 7 to form a fluidtight connection. Alternatively, screwed clips or clamps may be used to hold the ends of jacket 2 clamped against the tube envelope. A number of screw-threaded integrally formed inlet or outlet fittings 3 may be provided, those not in use being sealed off by caps or plugs. A hole 8 in the jacket may be formed to allow the mounting of a thermostat on a platform (10), Figs. 4 and 6 (not shown). The polycarbonate plastics jacket 2 may have convolutions along its length or internal projections to produce turbulent coolant flow within the jacket. Cooling may also be by the action of latent heat of vaporization.
