[Also in Division C1] Articles for use in the manufacture of glass comprise a core and a sheath with an interfacial space therebetween in which the partial pressure of oxygen is reduced to a pressure below one micron, the core comprising tungsten or molybdenum or an alloy of tungsten and molybdenum, the sheath comprising a platinum group metal or an alloy based on at least one platinum group metal, and a barrier layer disposed between the core and the sheath to prevent contact between the core and the sheath. A " getter " may be disposed between the core and the barrier layer to assist in reducing the partial pressure of oxygen and is a coating of Zr, Ti or V or may be 0À5-1À0 wt. percent Zr alloyed with a Mo core. The barrier layer, of refractory material, may be carbides, silicides, borides, sulphides, nitrides or oxides.
