Abstract
1,195,214. Filled polymer compositions. AMICON CORP. 15 June, 1967, No. 27686/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C1] A finely divided composition comprising a non-reinforcing filler and from 1 to 100%, based on the weight of said filler, of an organic treating material, which treating material contains (a) from 0.1 to 10%, by weight of the filler, of an ethylenically unsaturated organic compound having a chemical affinity for the surface of said filler, (b) from 1 to 50%, by weight of the filler, of an organic compound having at least two polymerizable ethylenic unsaturations in the molecule and (c) from 0.5 to 5%, based on the total weight of unsaturated compounds in the treating material, of a free radical generator, is dispersed in a polymer matrix and heated. Examples are given in which: (1) kaolin is treated with a mixture containing components selected from (a) a quaternary ammonium chloride containing a C 12 to C 20 -unsaturated aliphatic group, 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine, allyl isocyanate, bis-(2-isocyanatoethyl) fumarate, triallyl cyanurate and gamma-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane, (b) 1,3-butylene glycol dimethacrylate, 1,4-butylene glycol diacrylate, trimethylol propane triacrylate or trimethacrylate, triallyl cyanurate, divinyl benzene, diallyl phthalate, tetra-allyl oxyethane, tetra-allyl methylenediamine, hydroxylterminated polybutadiene, a polyester resinstyrene mixture, a mixture of trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate polybutadiene liquid resin, hydroxyl-terminated butadiene-styrene liquid copolymer and diethylene glycol diacrylate and (c) dicumyl peroxide, 2,5 - dimethyl - 2,5 - di - (t.-butylperoxy) - hexane, 2,5 - dimethyl - 2,5 - di (t.- butylperoxy) - hexyne - 3, cumene hydroperoxide, lauroyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, isopropyl percarbonate and azodiisobutyronitrile, together with cobalt naphthenate in some cases, the treated kaolin being incorporated in polyethylene; (2) a kaolin/titania mixture is treated with material containing 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, 1,4-butyleneglycol diacrylate, the said peroxyhexane and cobalt naphthenate and mixed with polyethylene; (3) calcium carbonate is treated with material comprising methacrylic acid, 1,3-butyleneglycol dimethacrylate and the said peroxyhexyne-3 and mixed with polyethylene; (4) silica is treated with material comprising (a) 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine or methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane, (b) 1,3- butyleneglycol dimethacrylate and (c) the said peroxyhexyne-3 and incorporated in polyethylene; (5) asbestos is treated with material comprising 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, 1,3-butyleneglycol dimethacrylate and the said peroxyhexyne-3 and incorporated in polyethylene; (6) kaolin is treated with 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, 1,3-butylene glycol diacrylate, the said peroxyhexane and cobalt naphthenate and mixed with polypropylene and (7) kaolin is treated with 2-methyl-5-vinyl-pyridine, hydroxyl-terminated styrene-butadiene copolymer and the said peroxyhexyne-3 and mixed with polystyrene.
