Abstract

Cross-linked vinyl chloride polymers are made either by mixing (a) a polymer containing or consisting of a graft copolymer of vinyl chloride with 5 to 70% by weight, calculated on the total amount of graft copolymer, of an ethylene-vinyl ester copolymer containing 20 to 80% by weight of vinyl ester and 80 to 20% by weight of ethylene, with (b) 0.5 to 10% by weight calculated on (a) of an organic peroxide which decomposes at from 40 to 180 DEG C., and heating the mixture to a temperature from 40 DEG to 180 DEG C. and above that at which the peroxide decomposes, or exposing the polymer (a) to high energy radiation at room temperature in the absence of an organic peroxide. Peroxides specified benzoyl, dichlorobenzoyl, tert.-butyl cumyl and dicumyl peroxides, and isopropyl and dicyclohexyl peroxydicarbonates. Also present with the graft copolymer may be up to 40% of a polyunsaturated polymerizable compound, e.g. triallyl phosphate and cyanurate, and tetraallyl silicate. Other materials which may be present during cross-linking are carbon black, barium-cadmium, laurate, zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate and epoxidized soyabean oil.
