Abstract

Graft polymers consisting of (1) 25 to 67% by weight of an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer containing 20 to 80% by weight of vinyl ester units, and graft polymerized thereon, (2) 75 to 33% by weight of a copolymer containing 55 to 95% by weight of vinyl chloride units and 45 to 5% by units of at least one polymerizable vinylidene monomer, are cross-linked either (A) by mixing them with 0.5 to 10% by weight of an organic peroxide decomposing substantially completely at temperatures from 40 DEG to 180 DEG C. and heating the mixtures at temperatures from 40 DEG to 180 DEG C. and above that at which the organic peroxide decomposes, or (B) by exposing the graft polymers to high energy radiation in the absence of an organic peroxide. The cross-linking may be carried out in the presence of cross-linking monomers, e.g. polyallyl esters. The examples describe cross-linking processes using the following materials: (a) graft polymers derived from ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers on which have been grafted mixtures of vinyl chloride with one or more of vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, 2-hydroxy-n-propyl methacrylate, n-propyl and n-dodecyl hydrogen maleates, vinylidene chloride and n-butyl methacrylate, (b) benzoyl, cumyl and tert.-butyl cumyl peroxides and dicyclohexyl peroxydicarbonate, and (c) triallyl cyanurate.
