Abstract
1,160,299. Suspension polymerization of vinyl aromatic compounds. REXALL DRUG & CHEMICAL CO. 23 Dec., 1966 [27 Dec., 1965], No. 57762/66. Heading C3P. Vinyl aromatic compounds, e.g. styrene, are polymerized by forming a suspension in water of the compound and heating at elevated temperatures in the presence of a minor amount of an initiator which comprises (a) an organic initiator which has a ¢ life of 20 hours or less at 85‹ C. and (b) tert.-butyl peracetate or tert.- butyl peroxy isopropyl carbonate. The (a) initiator may be benzoyl, caproyl, lauroyl, cyclohexanone or decanoyl peroxide; t-butyl peroctoate or azo-bis-isobutyronitrile. The heating may be carried out at 70-95‹ C. for 1-8 hours, then raised to 110-135‹ C. in a period of 1-3 hours and maintained at that temperature for 1-5 hours. Tri-calcium phosphate may be used as a suspending agent,
