Abstract

The difference between two pressures is measured by gradually applying 16, 17, the pressures to the arms of a manometer 10 and by measuring the difference between the displacements of two mirrors 24, 25 on the surface of each column of liquid, e.g. mercury, by means of an electrical interferometer 21 which, by shining light, e.g. from a laser, via transparent sealing plugs 14, 15 down the two arms of the manometer, produces electrical pulses which are counted 27. Temperature compensation can be effected either by enclosing the whole unit in a temperature regulated box or by measuring the temperature of the manometer liquid by means of a float 32 in an additional tube 30, the depth of the float corresponding to temperature and being measured and used by the interferometer to provide a corrected output.
