Abstract
Pressure variations are transformed into variations in an electric current using a piezoelectric element (comprising a liquid crystal in a supple envelope) lit by a source whose beam is measured by a photoelectric detector after its passage through the crystal. The small size and high accuracy allows the device to be used in measuring blood pressure in vivo. It may comprise the liquid crystal at one end of an optical fibre and the light source, a semi-transparent plate (at 45 degrees to the source) and the detector (at 90 degrees to the source).
