[Also in Division F2] A "pot" bearing for a bridge or other structure comprises a cushion 1 of load-bearing elastomeric or plastic material contained within an open-topped pot with a bottom 2, peripheral wall 3 and a cap 4 supported on the cushion 1 so as to permit limited rocking movement and with packing rings 5 to seal the cap 4 to the wall 3. In a method of increasing the thickness of the cushion 1 additional elastomeric or plastic material is forced into the pot while the bearing is under load. As shown a nozzle 6 with a chamfered end 7 passes through the wall 3 and extends approximately to the centre of the pot so that additional material can be forced under suitable pressure, from a pressure cylinder (not shown), through bore 8 to be uniformly distributed between the underside of the cushion 1 and the bottom of the pot, thereby raising the cap 4, along with the structure thereon, by the requisite amount.
