Abstract

1,194,560. Copolymerizing vinyl and vinylidene chlorides. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 13 Oct., 1967 [14 Oct., 1966], No. 46840/67. Heading C3P. Vinyl and vinylidene chlorides are copolymerized in aqueous suspension and the temperature is controlled to maintain a constant pressure. The vinyl chloride preferably forms 10-30% of the vinyl-vinylidene chloride monomer mixture. Preferred initiator is azodiisobutyronitrile; lauroyl or benzoyl peroxide or isopropyl peroxydicarbonate are also mentioned. Methyl cellulose is used as dispersing agent in the example. Temperatures of 50- 70‹ C. are used to maintain a constant pressure in the range 60-110 p.s.i.g. The product is formed into a film.
