Abstract

1363566 Gaseous phase polymerization SOLVAY ET CIE SA 4 Feb 1972 [5 Feb 1971] 5311/72 Addition to 1124237 Heading C3P In the gaseous phase polymerization of vinyl chloride in the presence of a free radical initiator and an inert solid, especially PVC particles, liquid vinyl chloride is injected to control the temperature while controlling the pressure below the saturated vapour pressure of the monomers at the polymerization temperature. The initiator is preferably dispersed on the inert solid and in examples is lauroyl peroxide or a mixture thereof with benzoyl peroxide or diethyl peroxycarbonate. In one example propylene is present as comonomer. A stirred horizontal reactor is used or a vertical fluidized bed reactor. The conditions of Specifications 1,124,237 and 1,308,103 are preferred.
