Abstract

Vinyl acetate, optionally together with a monomer copolymerizable therewith, is polymerized in emulsion in water containing an anionic emulsifying agent and a peroxy catalyst, the polymerization being effected, in the presence of a cation concentration of 15 to 40 millimoles per litre of water, exclusive of cations from the emulsifying agent, and an emulsifying agent concentration of 25 to 35 millimoles per litre of water. Specified comonomers are dibutyl maleate, dibutyl fumarate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and butyl acrylate. Specified emulsifying agents are sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate and sodium lauryl sulphate. Specified catalysts are potassium, sodium and ammonium persulphates and alkali metal perborates. Cations may be provided by buffer materials such as sodium bicarbonate, sodium acetate, and mono- and disodium phosphates, due allowance being made for impurities in the emulsifier. The emulsions may be used in washable emulsion paints. Examples describe the preparation of polyvinyl acetate emulsions in the presence of potassium persulphate, sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate containing sodium sulphate as impurity, and sodium bicarbonate.
