Abstract

In a modification of the process of the parent Specification, vinyl acetate is copolymerized with a fumaric, maleic or acrylic ester in water containing an anionic emulsifying agent and a peroxy catalyst wherein the total cation concentration exclusive of cations from the emulsifying agent is 15-40 millimoles/litre and the emulsifying agent concentration is 35-60 millimoles/litre. Specified ester comonomers are dibutyl maleate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and dibutyl fumarate. Specified catalysts are sodium persulphate, ammonium persulphate and alkali metal perborates. Specified emulsifiurs are sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate and sodium lauryl sulphate. Buffers such as sodium bicarbonate, sodium acetate and sodium phosphate may be used. The monomers may be added during polymerization. In examples vinyl acetate and dibutyl maleate are copolymerized in the presence of potassium persulphate, sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate and sodium bicarbonate.
