Abstract
A copolymer is produced by polymerizing 1-99% of vinyl acetate, 1-99% of an N-aryl maleimide and 0-30% of one other monomer, e.g. styrene, a -methyl styrene, vinyl chloride, acrylates, methacrylates, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, dialkyl maleates or fumarates, or maleic ahydrides. The maleimide may be N-methyl, N-cyclohexyl, N-phenyl, N-(2-substituted phenyl), N-chlorophenyl, N-bromophenyl or N-o-tolyl maleimide. The monomers may be polymerized in bulk, solution or in aqueous suspension, e.g. containing hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate or sodium lauryl sulphate using as catalyst azo-diisobutyronitrile, lauroyl peroxide or cyclohexyl sulphonyl peroxide, or a mixture of potassium persulphate and sodium metabisulphite.
