Abstract

Fluoro-olefins are polymerized in aqueous media by a method which comprises subjecting the reaction system to ionizing radiation in the presence of a water-soluble, fluorine-free anionic surface-active agent and a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon which is liquid under the polymerization conditions, in the absence of oxygen at 0 DEG to 100 DEG C. under a pressure of 1 to 100 kg./cm.2 Specified fluoro-olefins are vinyl fluoride, vinylidene fluoride, trifluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, hexafluoropropene, octafluorocyclobutene and trifluorochloroethylene, and mixtures, e.g. of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropene. Specified surface - active agents are water-soluble salts of aliphatic alcohol sulphates and phosphates, aliphatic carboxylic acids, and aliphatic and alkylaryl sulphonic acids, particularly sodium, triethanolamine and ammonium lauryl sulphates, and sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate. Specified hydrocarbons are butane, hexane, heptane, cyclohexane, octadecane, eicosane, tetradecane cetane and paraffin wax. Polymerization initiators, e.g. ammonium and potassium persulphates and azo compounds, may be present. Examples describe the polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene in the presence of (1) sodium lauryl sulphate and n-cetane, (2) ammonium lauryl sulphate and paraffin wax, (3) sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate and n-cetane, and (4) ammonium dodecylbenzene sulphonate and paraffin wax.
