Abstract

Fluoro-olefines are polymerized in aqueous media by a method which subjects the reaction system to ionizing radiation in the presence of 0.001 to 10% of an anionic surface-active agent having a water-solubility of at least 0.001 weight per cent at 100 DEG C. and containing a polyfluoroalkyl group of 4 to 13 carbon atoms, at least half of the atoms bonded to said carbon atoms being fluorine atoms and the remainder being hydrogen or chlorine atoms at 0 DEG to 100 DEG C. under a pressure of 1 to 100 kg./cm.2. Specified fluoro-olefines are vinyl fluoride, vinylidene fluoride, trifluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, hexafluoropropene, octafluorocyclobutene, trifluorochloroethylene, and mixtures, e.g. of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropene. Specified surface-active agents are water-soluble salts of polyfluoroaliphatic carboxylic and sulphonic acids, sulphates and phosphates of polyfluoroaliphatic alcohols, and polyfluoropolychlorocarboxylic acids. These may be used with conventional surface-active agents, e.g. water-soluble salts of sulphates and phosphates of aliphatic alcohols and of aliphatic and aromatic sulphonic acids. Polymerization may be effected batchwise or continuously, and in the presence of aliphatic hydrocarbons liquid at the polymerization temperature, e.g. butane, heptane, hexane, cyclohexane, dodecane, hexadecane and paraffin wax; and stabilizers, e.g. hydrocarbons having more than 12 carbon atoms, trifluorotrichloroethane and tetrafluorodichloroethane. Irradiation may be effected in the initial stages of the polymerization or throughout. In examples ammonium perfluoro-octanoate is used as surface-active agent in the polymerization of (1) tetrafluoroethylene; and tetrafluoroethylene in the presence of (2, 3, 5 and 6) hexadecane, (7) dodecane and trifluorotrichloroethane, and (9) n-cetane; and the copolymerization of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene in the presence of (8) hexadecane. The fluoro-olefines may be copolymerized, e.g. with vinyl chloride or perfluorovinyl ethers.
