Abstract

1,194,532. Vegetation cutting machines. WILKINSON SWORD Ltd. 6 June, 1967 [7 June, 1966], No. 25210/66. Heading A1F. A vegetation cutting machine comprises a cutter rotor, a fan or compressor for producing a cushion of air to support the machine, and a power source arranged to drive at least the fan or compressor, the cutter rotor and the fan or compressor being rotatable at variable relative speeds. As shown the fan rotor 17 and cutter rotor 15 are driven by a common power source, e.g. an electric motor or internal combustion engine, through a differential gear 12. The fan output may be ducted through an annular-section duct from the fan outlet to an annular section discharge opening disposed radially outwardly of the cutter rotor. In a modification the compressor or fan is driven and is provided with a ring of diffuser blades and its output is ducted to a ring of turbine blades fast for rotation with the cutter rotor. The exhaust from the turbine is ducted to provide the air cushion. A part only of the compressor output can be supplied to the turbine the remainder being ducted to provide the air cushion.
