A ca,p and nipple assembly for use with a vessel, for example a feeding bottle, having a mouth and adapted to contain liquid, comprises a flexible nipple adapted to be mounted on the mouth of the vessel, an insert member adapted to be mounted between the mouth of the vessel and the nipple, which insert member consists of a central section which is imperforate and a peripheral section which is apertured or slotted, and a cap adapted to 'be mounted on the mouth of the vessel to enclose the nipple and the insert member, the construction of the nipple, insert member and cap being such that communication between the interior of the nipple is prevented when the cap is mounted on the mouth of the vessel but is established upon removal of the cap from the mouth of the vessel. Figure 3 illustrates a portion of a vessel in the form of a feeding bottle 10 upon the mouth 12 of which is mounted a cap and nipple assembly which comprises a nipple 21, an insert member 29 and a cap 26. The cap, which is of the tear-off type, is retained on the bottle by a crimp 34 formed about a flange 14 provided on the neck 16 of the bottle; the interior of the cap is in engagement with a deformable annular rib 24 provided on the exterior of the nipple which also is provided with an inwardly extending annular flange which is in engagement with the flange provided on the neck of the bottle. The insert member consists of an imperforate central section and a peripheral section which is provided with spaced legs 30a which define slots therebetween; each leg terminates in an inwardly extending foot 31. In the sealed condition; as illustrated, the cap presses an annular portion of the peripheral section of the insert member, which imperforated portion engages in sealing relationship against an annular flat surface 20 provided on the bottle thereby to prevent communication between the interior of the bottle and the interior of the nipple via the passages defined by the legs of the insert member and the bevelled annular flat surface 20a of a shoulder 17 provided at the mouth of the bottle; upon removal of the cap, the nipple springs erect and moves away from the bottle, the inwardly extending annular flange of the nipple bringing the feet of the legs of the peripheral section of the insert member into engagement with the bottle beneath the shoulder thereof whereby the insert member moves out of engagement with the annular flat surface of the bottle thereby to establish communication between the interior of the bottle and the interior of the nipple. Figures 6 and 10 (not shown) illustrate embodiments of the cap and nipple assembly wherein the peripheral section of the insert member is provided not with legs which define slots but with apertures located in the inner annular portion thereof, the cap illustrated in Figure 6 being provided on the interior thereof with threads adapted to cooperate with corresponding threads (formed on the exterior of the bottle and the cap illustrated in Figure 10 being of the tear-off type and having a construction similar to the cap illustrated in Figure 3.
