Abstract

1,193,355. Fixing nerographic images. RANK XEROX Ltd. Oct. 6, 1967 [Oct. 11, 1966], No.45731/67. Heading G2H. An apparatus for fixing heat fusible toner images to a support, comprises a heated movable surface which feeds the support, held in close contact with the surface, past an infrared source 43 to effect fusing. As shown, the movable surface is a roller 20 to which a sheet beading a toner image is held by electrostatic forces. The roller 20 has a metal cylinder 30 having an insulating coating 29 of tetrafluorethylene surrounding a heating element 35 connected to a temperature control 33. An exhaust 37 connected to a vacuum pump 34 withdraws air from the roller under the control of temperature control 33 to maintaining the temperature of the roller 20 constant. The infrared source 43, Fig. 1, comprises a quartz lamp in a reflector 43 extending axially of roller 20. An exhaust manifold 44 removes gases created during fusing to prevent a film building up on the reflector. A stripper 65, Fig. 2, removes the sheet from the roller 20 and guides it to baffles 68. Residual toner on the roller 20 is attracted by a wick of tetrafluorethylene impregnated with silicone oil in a housing 75. Unfused toner is removed from the sheet by a brush 5, Fig. 1, rotated within a hood 53 connected to vacuum. Sheets are supplied to the drum 13 from a supply 10 provided with heaters 102 and a humidity control.
