A wet tubular knitted fabric is converted to dry open width knitted fabric by longitudinally slitting the wet fabric tube, opening the wet fabric to open width form, rendering the liquid content of the wet open width fabric substantially uniform, and drying the fabric while maintaining it at a predetermined width. As shown, the wet tubular fabric 11, which has been scoured, bleached or dyed, is supplied in rope form from a container 10 mounted on a turntable 14 so that as the fabric passes over a guide roller 12 it is untwisted. The untwisted fabric 15 5 passes to a slitting and opening station 13 comprising a slitting knife 16, conveyor 17 to engage the fabric in advance of the knife 16 and divergent tenter-like means (18), Fig. 1 (not shown), to pick up and open out the edges of the slit fabric. At a treating stage 19, the open width fabric 20 passes through a liquid bath, which may contain resins or other chemicals, and while in the bath is maintained in full width surface contact with processing rollers. Additionally or alternatively, the fabric 20 passes between padding Tolls (21), Fig. 1 (not shown), to render the liquid content uniform. The fabric 20 is then controllably overfed into two drying units 22, 23 in tandem each comprising a rotary reel and tenter means to carrying the fabric with and about the reel whilst maintaining the fabric edges at a predetermined width. After drying, the fabric is stripped from the tenter means at 25 and layered at 26 or wound into a roll.
