Abstract

1,192,014. Air cushion vehicles. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 8 June, 1967 [15 June, 1966], No. 26745/66. Heading B7K. An air cushion supporting unit comprises a base member 9 to which are attached a plurality of inflatable U-section members 17 of the form disclosed in Specification 1,043,351. The base member 9 is carried by the ram of an hydraulic spring unit 7 and air is supplied to the cushion space 8 through conduit 11 from duet 12 which is fed by a fan driven by a variable-speed motor whereby the pressure of the cushion may be so adjusted that the upward loading on member 9 balances the downward force exerted by unit 7 with the inwardly inclined walls 20 of the skirt compressed into contact with the ground. Should the supporting unit traverse a depression 23 in the ground the walls of the skirt will extend thereby reducing the surface-engaging area of the cushion and the upward force exerted against the action of unit 7 which will then urge the supporting unit down to a position of equilibrium. The reverse action would be initiated if the skirt were further compressed by enegagement with a ground surface protuberance.
