Abstract
1,190,856. Toy crawling vehicle. MATTEL, Inc. 2 Feb., 1968 [3 Feb., 1967], No. 5544/68. Heading A6S. A self-propelled crawling toy comprises a space-vnicle 10 having a body 12 with an electric motor mounted therein to drive an axle 16, on each end of which is a hub 38 having extending from it a plurality of spokes 60 of sufficient length that they may extend forward of the body. On rotation of the axle the spokes enable obstacles in the vehicle's path to be sunmounted. The spokes are mounted so that they are staggered. The toy has a tail-piece 222 of which the tip forms a third point of contact with the surface. The vehicle may be driven by an electric motor through a gear and clutch train, such that the vehicle's forward motion may be halted and a winch 68 and cable 72 set into operation. On the cable being wound in to a predetermined extent, the clutch automatically re-engages the drive or disengages the winch. Each hub may be equipped with clutch means so that, if the spokes become jammed in an obstable, the drive is automatically disengaged. The vehicle may be equipped with a simulated cockpit 250 and control panel 252.
