Abstract

1,190,801. Polyethylene terephthalate. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 11 May, 1967 [12 May, 1966], No. 21971/67. Heading C3R. Polyethylene terephthalate is made by (1) reacting dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol in the presence of an antimony catalyst (e.g. antimony oxide) and a zinc salt (e.g. zinc acetate) to form a molten prepolymer having an intrinsic viscosity of 0À2 to 0À5; (2) adding a reducing stabilizer to the molten prepolymer (e.g. phosphorous acid or an alkyl phosphite); (3) cooling the prepolymer to solidify it and thereafter grinding it to a particle size of less than 600 microns; and (4) subjecting the prepolymer particles to a solid phase polymerization at above 150‹ C. and in the presence of an inert gas until the intrinsic viscosity of the prepolymer is greater than 0À5, characterized in that the inert gas atmosphere contains at least 0À005% by weight of ammonia, acetaldehyde or ethylene glycol and 1 to 6 volume per cent of oxygen, whereby metallic antimony is converted to an oxidized state. Prior to solid phase polymerization, the prepolymer may be treated with an organic liquid to enhance its crystallinity. The solid phase polymerization may be effected in a horizontal tube, an upright cylinder or a rotating tilted cylinder by a static bed or fluidized bed technique.
